Noah Thompson and HunterGirl returned to the American Idol stage on Sunday night (April 24) to perform the brand-new duet version of Thompson’s debut single, “One Day Tonight.”
Thompson was crowned winner of season 20 winner while HunterGirl earned runner-up. During last year’s American Idol finale, Thompson made the live debut of his heartfelt single. This time around, the former construction worker was joined by HunterGirl to sing the mid-tempo track in front of a stunning, scenic background.

First, Thompson graced the stage on his own, and then HunterGirl joined him to help finish off the sentimental lyrics that find the singers dreaming of a future with their partners. Together, they belted out the track in front of the excited audience as well as Idol judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie.

“She wants a wedding in September/ Save up all winter/ Spend our summers in a fix ‘er upper in Denver/ She wants a girl and a boy/ And a old dog named Ole Roy Lord I hope this old boy can give her that life/ So go on girl/ Pour a glass of wine/ And dream aloud, talk about/ One day tonight,” they delivered in the chorus.

Co-written by Jared Griffin, Trannie Anderson, and Brett Sheroky and produced by Jimmy Robbins, “One Day Tonight” immediately shot to No. 1 on the charts and continues to rack up on-demand streams.

Following their performance, HunterGirl took to social media to share a photo of her and Thompson donning their matching denim ensembles. Her caption read, “Had a blast being back on the @americanidol stage tonight!! 🙌🏻 “
While catching up with host Ryan Seacrest, the singers revealed that they’ve recorded a duet version of Thompson’s “One Day Tonight,” and it is available now.
Sharing the news on social media, Thompson wrote, “This song’s officially out ya’ll, hope y’all enjoy it! So happy to have @huntergirlmusic on this!! Thank you @americanidol for allowing us to come back and perform!!”
Since their time on the show, the pair have both continued to grow their careers and solidify their names in country music. Now, they are getting the chance to share their experiences with the current round of Idol contestants who are hoping to follow in their footsteps.
“Y’all just keep doing your thing and be yourself man that’s all I can tell you. You guys are killing it,” Thompson told the group of rising talent.
Idol Winner Will Soon Release An EP
Before heading off stage, fans also learned that Thompson has even more music in the works as he’s preparing to release his debut EP, Middle of God Knows Where, on June 9.
Meanwhile, HunterGirl recently unveiled her new love song, “Lonely Outta You.” The tender melody highlights HunterGirl’s distinctive vocals as she bears a hopefulness to mend a love interest’s broken heart and begin their own happy journey together. The singer/songwriter penned this endearing track with Sarah Buxton and Jimmy Robbins during her time on American Idol.
This song follows a string of emotional releases including her No. 1 iTunes All Genre and Country chart-topping “Red Bird,” and the love letter to her hometown of Winchester, Tennessee, “Hometown Out Of Me.”
The singers wrapped up 2022 playing on a co-headlining tour that came to a close in St Louis, MO on December 2. This year, HunterGirl is hitting the road on select dates with Luke Bryan, Parmalee, Josh Turner and Luke Combs for his pre-show tailgate stage.
Thompson, who is now officially a Nashville resident, also has several headlining dates on the books for 2023 including shows with Luke Combs for his pre-show tailgate stage. He’s also scheduled to appear at a number of festivals including the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, Poke Sallet Festival, national sand bass festival, Nashville’s CMA Fest, and more.
Additionally, Thompson and HunterGirl will share the stage once again on April 29 at The Old Gray in Monterey, TN.
