Lainey Wilson has claimed the hearts of country music fans with her on-stage presence and undeniable vocal abilities. She also got to show the world a new side of her talents when she made her acting debut in the Season 5 premiere of Yellowstone as a musician named Abby, a character written solely for Wilson by the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan.
The first half of this season wrapped up on Paramount Network on January 1, and while the premiere date for part 2 has yet to be confirmed, it’s expected to return in the summer. So not only are fans wondering when the Western drama will return but also if Wilson’s character will get to continue her storyline. The result of the uncertainty comes from several reports of a behind-the-scenes feud between Yellowstone star, Kevin Costner and creator, Sheridan.
The country star recently caught up with Entertainment Tonight‘s Cassie DiLaura before her performance at the 2023 Stagecoach Festival to discuss the fate of her role on the popular TV series.
Wilson revealed that her first time on set was a memorable one. She may have been stepping out of her comfort zone, but the cast made her feel right at home.
“It’s crazy, you know? They’ve honestly just welcomed me with open arms. They have just treated me like one of their own. I didn’t really know what to expect, especially the first day on set, but they treated me with respect,” she shared with the outlet.
While on the show, Wilson has had the chance to showcase a number of original songs off her latest Bell Bottom Country album including “Watermelon Moonshine,” “Hold My Halo,” and her Emmy-nominated tune, “Smell Like Smoke.” The Louisiana native’s song will be submitted for an Emmy nomination in the category, Outstanding Music and Lyrics.
Debuted Music On The Hit Show
“I started out doing music, and that’s always going to be my focus. That’s my way of expressing myself,” Wilson continued as she reflected on the opportunity to bring her passion for music to a new kind of audience and the support she’s felt from her co-stars. “And they have a different way of expressing themselves and being creative. But [there] was this mutual respect for each other.”
Several members of the Yellowstone family attended this year’s Stagecoach festival including Wilson and Sheridan as well as Ryan Bingham and Luke Grimes. Wilson shared she was hoping to catch up with the show’s creator and maybe get some answers to her burning questions.
“I’m planning on getting an update today,” Wilson said before adding, “Like, just tell me when man. Yeah, I have no clue what’s going on. I feel like I’ve learned that TV business is even crazier than the music business. And that’s the truth.”
As of now, the “Heart Like A Truck” singer is just “waiting on that phone call.” While Wilson and fans wait on the future of Yellowstone, she is currently focused on her music career and serving as support for Luke Combs on his 2023 world tour.
On Tour With Luke Combs
The pair of artists have a long history of songwriting and trying to make it in the industry. As someone who’s known Combs since before his days of fame, Wilson can confirm that he “has not changed a bit.”
“He might have a little more money in the bank, but he is still the same old guy. He just got a good heart,” she explained.
“I knew immediately when I met Luke Combs back in, I think it was 2014, that he was special and he had something to say and it’s so crazy to see what’s happened for him and his career,” she continued. “It couldn’t have happened to a better person.”
The massive stadium trek kicked off on March 25 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and is slated to continue through July 29, when they will wrap things up in Philadelphia, PA at Lincoln Financial Field. Along with Wilson, the tour features opening acts, Riley Green, Flatland Cavalry, and Brent Cobb.
